Fulfilling your God-Given Purpose

A purpose means an intention or a function or a use. You were born with a purpose; God had an intention when he created you. You need to discover that purpose and be determined to fulfill it.
Your earthly job or personal ambition is different from your heavenly or God-given purpose. This God-given purpose is your function as part of the body of Christ and you are expected to fulfill it.

Now, let us consider some things you need to do in order to start and complete the assignment the way God wants.

  1. You Should Learn To Stay In God’s PresenceYou cannot do God’s assignment successfully, without a very close relationship with him. You need to maintain his presence all the time. This will help you to receive details of the assignment and specific directions on how to carry out these detailed tasks.Always consult with God first on issues, before you consult other believers. Others should help you in polishing and refining the substance you have, they can’t give you the original substance. (Gal1: 16-18).You must be more concerned about carrying out God’s instructions than pleasing people (1 Samuel 15:2).

His presence guarantees direction, provision, protection and peace. In 1kings 17:1-16. The word of the Lord kept on coming to Elijah and he kept on receiving direction to places where his provision was and he was protected from the wicked king, Ahab.

It doesn’t matter the caliber of people he sends to help you (v9), the important thing is that he will help you and protect you if you wait on him.

  2. Stop Waiting For A Conducive Moment To Start, Obey PromptlyIf you are convinced that it is time to start that assignment, just start; even if you can’t understand all the details and it seems there are many obstacles, and little resources.Remember there’s time for every purpose on earth (Eccles 3:1). If it’s time to start and you don’t key into the grace of the moment, you may never start.
  3. You Need Knowledge To Fulfill Your PurposeWithout adequate knowledge of the word of God, no matter the type of assignment or ministry you have been given, you will become stale and will not be able to go far. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom..” (Col 3:16). Don’t wait until you have a ministration before you study. Learn about that ministry specifically and about Christianity generally from the bible and other means such as Christian literature, tapes, conferences etc.
  4. Get The Anointing On You To Perform Any Divine AssignmentContinue your ministry with the childlike trust you had when you started, when it seemed you were not capable of doing anything without God and you depended on him absolutely.Remember what he said in John 15:4,5; that without him you can do nothing. The truth is that what ever anyone is doing without God will actually amount to nothing at the end of the day (Mat 7:21-23).Don’t try to accomplish any Godly task with human efforts. Gal 3:3 says it is foolish.

All believers have an anointing within, that is, the Holy Spirit, but we need to experience an anointing that comes upon us specially to perform our tasks. This experience should be as often as we perform any divine task.

Smith Wigglesworth often prayed in the spirit for two hours before any meeting. If you have been achieving certain results before, it would be multiplied in several folds if you make up your mind to wait on God to receive the anointing before performing any divine task.

The effect of your efforts will be long lasting because the anointing penetrates peoples’ lives.

In 1 Kings 18:36-37, though Elijah was known to be a powerful prophet, and he was commanded by the Lord to appear before Ahab and do those things he had to do, he still had to pray to God vehemently for the manifestation of his power.

In the same way, you must be desperately hungry for the power of God and the anointing to be able to receive it.

Moreover, you must always acknowledge God in everything you do in order to keep it flowing. Remember He will not share his glory with anyone (Isaiah 42:8).

  5. You Must Continue To Exercise Faith In Every Aspect Of LifeYou are expected to live by faith (Rom 10:17), therefore you must build your faith and exercise it continuously; not just for the vision but for every aspect of your life, including family life, finances, growth, health, protection etc.Think big, dare to ask others to join you. Let people know that you need them. Don’t beg; just let them know what the Lord had told you to do.Faith will allow you to dream big and get to where the Lord had purposed. Without it, you’ll be stagnant.

Faith will also help you to quench all the fiery darts of the enemy which he had planned to use to stop you on the way to fulfilling your purpose.

  6. You Need Good Character To Fulfill Your Purpose (1 Tim.3:2,3 &7).Christian ministry or assignment is a service to God and human beings. Bad character will repel people from you and prevent them from being blessed (1 Cor. 12:5-7).No matter how spiritual or skillful you are if your behaviour repels people, you will not be able reach their hearts. Remember that the level of value they place on your life will determine the flow of virtue, from you to them. Moreover, If you don’t have good character (characteristics of the fruit of the spirit), people will not support you and your ministry will not be able to go as far as God intends. Remember as you are going up, your character goes along with you and becomes more difficult to modify.

It’s better to deal with it now, so that it doesn’t deal with you while at the top. Many things are important in forming good character but always remember to be humble, (Numbers 12:3, Phil 2:5-9), selfless, (Phil 2:3-4), honest, peaceful (Gen 13:8) and joyful etc. Note that spiritual pride is as dangerous as ordinary one.

In conclusion, it is not enough to know your God given purpose, you must continuously wait on God to receive direction about it and constantly take steps as directed by the Holy Spirit in the direction of fulfilling it.
